Earthquake Preparedness

From Daddy: We had an earthquake around 3:20 a.m. yesterday morning. He didn’t wake up to it because the epicenter was far away.

At school this morning, during line-up, his principal and teachers discussed what to do during an earthquake. A fellow parent told me that the discussion was all in Cantonese but he later reported that it was in English.

This Morning

I asked him what he wanted for breakfast. We settled on cereal. When I asked him which he wanted, he went to the pantry to review his options.

He held and regarded the back of the box of Trader Joe’s Crisp Rice Cereal was great interest but he asked for Honey Bunches of Oats (one of his favorites). I suggested that I serve the Honey Bunches of Oats while he read the other box in the dining room. He agreed.

I’m so proud that he has become such a good reader. Later, while I was in another room, he wanted to tell me a joke [actually it was a riddle]. “Why did the dolphin cross the bay?”

“Why?” I asked.

“To get to the other tide!”

“Ha! Where did you learn that joke?” I asked. I figured that it was from school or something. He told me that it was on the cereal box.

What a good reader.

He asked me for a toasted bagel with spreading cheese. I told him that he had to finish his cereal, including the flakes. (He much prefers the sweet clusters.) He agreed, but by the time he finished his cereal, the time was sufficiently late that I told him that we would not be able to arrive at school “early” (i.e., as early as he occasionally prefers) if he has a bagel.

He decided that a bagel was better than school. (Yes, since Wednesday he has been less excited about school.)

We arrived at school around 8:20, not late by any stretch. As we walked into the school (past the breakfast lady who held the door; I made sure that we said “good morning” in Cantonese), he saw the array of breakfast cereals laid out for the before-school program kids. He inspected the containers and saw Cinnamon Toast Crunch. “YES!” he exclaimed triumphantly. He confirmed this evening that he ate cereal at school.

That’s three breakfasts.
